Stock farming of sheep started around 9000-7000 B.C. in one area of ancient Mesopotamia. The original strains of sheep were not fluffy or white. Since sheep are gentle, docile animals living gregariously in flocks, it was easy for humans to farm and move them together. Sheep were important for humans because of their high utility. They offered humans a moving fiber mill, dairy mill and meat mill. This usefulness is thought to be a reason for the coexistence of humans and sheep from early times. Wool is a protein fibre formed in the skin of sheep, and is thus one hundred percent natural. Every year sheep produce a new fleece, making wool a completely renewable fibre source. Wool is a hygroscopic fibre. As the humidity of the surrounding air rises and falls, the fibre absorbs and releases water vapour. Heat is generated and retained during the absorption phase, which makes wool a natural insulator. Wool is an active fibre that reacts to changes in body temperature. So it helps stay warm when the weather is cold, and cool when the weather is hot. Special building of wool fibres make them extremely elastic and soft.

Wool is an odour resistant by absorbing a sweat and releasing it into the air, before bacteria has a chance to develop and produce unpleasant body odour. The protective waxy coating on wool fibres makes wool products resistant to staining and they also pick up less dust as wool is naturally anti-static. It also responds instantly to ironing and won’t crush with handling. Wool is naturally safe. It is not known to cause allergies and does not promote the growth of bacteria. It can even reduce floating dust in the atmosphere, as the fibre’s microscopic scales are able to trap and hold dust in the top layers until vacuumed away.
